Top Two Films of September, 2010
This month was a strange month. I only saw two stellar films. However, I also saw a bunch of good but not great films. I'll list those as honorable mentions.
Also, Claude Chabrol died, so I saw several films by him that I hadn't seen. I was forced to see several of them without subtitles. Unfortunately none of those made the top list or the honorable mentions, because I had seen all his great films already. But it is still worth mentioning.
In fact, the top films I saw in September were directed by Julien Duvivier. I decided to explore his oeuvre this month, and I was not disappointed.
TOP FILMS:
"How rotten you are..."
Chair de poule (1963)
Flesh and Fantasy (1943)
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Malina (1991)
Notre histoire (1984)
Un autre homme, une autre chance (1977)
La vie est un roman/Life Is a Bed of Roses (1983) My last feature-length Alain Resnais film.
La gifle/The Slap (1974)
Voici le temps des assassins.../Deadlier Than the Male (1956)
Marie-Octobre (1959)
Lydia (1941)
La fin du jour (1939) A sweet movie about elderly actors who are about to be turned out of their retirement home.
Doa al karawan/The Curlew's Cry (1959) Egypt http://www.youtube.com/user/DrStrangefilm#grid/user/B2CC690199D51248
J'ai faim, j'ai froid (1984)
Les mystères du château de Dé (1929) Man Ray The word "Piscinema" flashed upon the screen which basically means "Swimming Pool/Cinema". It was filmed at the house of Charles and Anne-Marie de Noailles and was inspired by the poem by Mallarme which reads, "A throw of the dice will never abolish chance!" Images of a dice are displayed at the end to illustrate this. Also, the point was to show the guests at the house as ghosts.
